Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Viadeo… so many social networks on which we express ourselves. Consulted by recruiters and employers, they can sublimate a profile as well as harm a career. Taking care of one’s e-reputation has become one of the major challenges of candidates and companies.

When your posts betray you. An imprudent tweet, a damaging photo… and an entire recruitment process can be called into question. Social networks present themselves as a space of freedom allowing one to express oneself. Employers and recruitment professionals no longer hesitate to tour social networks to consult a candidate’s profile.

The risk? A misinterpretation of a message taken out of context. An imprudent tweet, a « questionable » photo or a clear-cut opinion on a sensitive subject and an entire recruitment process could be called into question. The candidate is not the only one to have to take care of their e-reputation; the company is also subject to the same rules.

Social networks or the art of putting oneself forward. The internet giants flatter everyone’s ego by allowing all to express themselves. A presence on the net is certainly not to be prohibited, but it must be managed with caution. The interest is to use these platforms wisely.

Keeping control of one’s e-reputation. While it is preferable to approach with caution subjects such as politics, religion or news items, the right to exchange ideas must be preserved. The solution is to protect one’s accounts on social networks with privacy options. Before publishing, ask oneself if this tweet, this like, or this comment may not harm us. Another solution is to favor quality over quantity.

Not being present on the web can be confusing and arouse suspicion among recruiters. Could it be that a candidate, absent from social networks, becomes a suspect candidate for that very reason? More and more people are limiting their presence to a few platforms and the use of pseudonyms is becoming an effective parry.
